These Forty Days

Lent began on Wednesday, February 26th. The Newman Center chapel was full-to-bursting each time ashes were distributed. People stood in the doorway for ashes at 12:10. And chairs had to be brought up from the basement to accommodate the crowd for the 5:15 Mass.

There was a certain irony to the large numbers of people, because Father Luke's homily was about the sad tendency of human being to live for the approval of the crowd. "What is the stage on which you live your life?" he asked. "Who are you performing for?" Most of us spend our lives living for the approval of others. Mere "creatures", as Father Luke put it. But in Lent, we take the time to deliberately live before the gaze of the Father, the eyes of God upon us. You can dive deeper into Lent and the gaze of God by listening to the whole homily here:

Family Dinners

Feed the hungry. This command is both a corporal work of mercy, and a necessity of college ministry. Students are hungry. But they aren't just hungry for food.

Clare, one of our FOCUS missionaries, realized that one of the many things students miss while at school is the chance to eat and talk with others. Breakfast might be a protein bar, eaten while walking to class. Lunch a sub sandwich eaten over a laptop. Dinner some frozen pizza with Netflix. Food is easy to come by; but family is scarce.

So Clare started "Family Dinners" here at the Newman Center. For the last several weeks, students have gathered on Sunday nights to share a meal with each other. Just like family dinners at home, they pray, eat, and laugh together.

Spring Formal

Newman students love to dance. And for the first time in a long time, they had a chance to do so with the Newman Center. Our Social Chairs, Abby, Aaron, Ben, and Allie, organized a Formal for all the students of undCatholic. The dance was held on Feb. 21st at the Gorecki Alumni Center. Ties were tied, dresses steamed, and Father Luke even dusted off his biretta.

Thank you to our Social Chairs for planning the event. And thanks to all those who made it a success.

Giving Hearts Day: WE DID IT!

On Giving Hearts Day, 214 donors gave $37,922 to support the Newman Center. $35,000 of those donations were matched, giving us a total of $72,922 -- 105% of our goal!

Everything we feature in this Newletter is made possible by those who give to support our mission. Thank You.
